My Mihi

We use our mihi to introduce ourselves. It helps others to know where we are from and to see if there are any connections. We have been working hard to learn the RSS mihi and have created some art to go with it.

We were inspired by our trip to the Marae last term and the way koru are used as part of a pattern to tell stories. In our art we have used koru to represent the people in our families. We have chosen their favourite colours to add another detail to our story. We chose a background for our koru to help share our connections.

Success Criteria:
  • My art tells a story about me
  • I can say the Mihi clearly
  •  I use expression when I speak

Reflection

I really like: doing my picture.

It was really hard when: learning all the words.

Something that really helped me was: practising the words lots.

Kerri Thinks
You thought about your family and the colours they like to create a piece of art that tells a story about you. You listened to Rosie's blog and the High 5 as we practised our mihi and you are starting to join in. Ka Pai Isaac.

Telling my story

On Friday 15th of May we had the Junior School cross-country. We ran hard in the mud and puddles; some of us even ran up and down Cycle Mountain!
We decided to tell our cross-country stories.
With Carolyn we thought about how we can use paint and symbols to share our story. We thought about what we could see, what we could hear, what we could feel and how we felt in our heart. We then told our story in ‘code’.

Success Criteria:
  • Create a code to tell my story
  • Speak clearly and with expression as I tell my story

Reflection

I really like: painting the picture

I think I need to practice: read louder.

Something that really helped me was: Carolyn showing me what to do.

Kerri Thinks
Isaac, you plan your writing with words and pictures. Sometimes you add 2 sentences to your story and I would love to see you do this each day. You are growing in independence as you write and you use your word card to find letters and words all by yourself. You have told your story in words during writing and in paint during art with Carolyn!

I am a scientist

OWe have been learning to think like scientists this term. Learning all about plants has helped us to become scientists. We have been asking lots of questions and trying to answer them. We found out that plants breathe and drink water. We found the best way to germinate a seed – seeds need water to germinate but the plant needs water, soil and sun to grow well.
WALT: investigate
         Ask questions
Make predictions (think about what is going to happen)
         Observe and record what happens
Use what we have observed to make conclusions
WALT share our ideas

Task
Show my science learning using play dough, drawing and labelling what we can see, classifying the plants and completing the plant life cycle activity.
Success Criteria:
I can ask questions
I think about what might happen
I look closely (observe)

I share my ideas

Our plants are in groups. Leaves are in one pile.

"look at my seeds" said Isaac

My seeds are on the tree. Can you see them?

Reflection

I really like: growing my own seed.

I think I need to practice: writing the names of the plant.

Something that really helped me was: drawing lots of pictures of plants.

Kerri thinks
I can see you have enjoyed thinking like a scientist and finding out about plants and what helps them to grow. You looked closely at the plants and are starting to add details to your drawings.

Nga Tae

We started by singing the colours song on our blog
Then in buddy time we shared the big book T-shirts. We thought we could use this book as inspiration for our learning so we made collage T-shirts. Rosie taught us how to say “This is my blue T-shirt” in Te Reo.

Success Criteria
ü  For the collage:
o   Small pieces of paper, the same colour
o   The white paper is all covered
o   Flappy edges glued down
ü  We know at least 4 colours in Te Reo
ü  We can say the colours correctly

How I am going

I helped create the t-shirt collage

Reflection

I really like: ripping the paper to put on my T-shirt.

I think I need to practice: saying the colours.

Something that really helped me was: watching the movie of the colour song.

Kerri thinks
You worked with your group to create the t-shirt we used in our learning. I think you like listening to the colours song and you are starting to join in with the tune and some colours you know. Ka Pai Isaac!

Read to Self

WALT: look at the picture to help us work out the word.

Task
Create a 'show me' on the ipad to share your learning. Take a photo of the book you are reading and record yourself reading. Remember to show your learning, check the success criteria… Have you reached your goal?

Success Criteria:
  • I look at the picture to help me.
  • I point at every word as I read it.
  • I have included a picture of the book I am reading.
  • I read in a clear voice.

Reflection

I really like: reading lots and lots of books.

I think I need to practice: using a big voice.

Something that really helped me was: reading lots of books.

Kerri thinks
You point to the words as you read and you use the pictures to help you work out what the story is about and what those tricky new words are. What a great idea Isaac, I think you need to practise reading in a big voice too! A big voice will help me to hear you better.

Excellence

We are learning all about Panekiretanga (excellence) as our value this term. We can show excellence in our learning and in our play. We can show excellence at school and at home... we can show excellence anywhere!

We think excellence is:
  • Giving it your your best shot and never giving up
  • If you don’t succeed, try and try again
  • Keep on practising
  • Do some thinking, then ask for help when you don’t know what to do
  • We all have our own excellence, and it can be different for different things
  • We need to encourage others – we show excellence in the way we talk.
  • We use our manners and share, including other people in our games – we show excellence in our play
WALT: show Panekiretanga (excellence) in our learning.

Task
Show excellence in the classroom:

  1. Using the discovery equipment explore, experiment and try something new.
  2. We love to try all the discovery activities and work
    together to play collaboratively.
  3. During buddy time work as a team to complete the T-shirt collage with no gaps, thumb size pieces of paper.
High 5 and Ci7cus learning together
  4. Use your i-time card and follow during maths. Give every activity your best shot and don't give up!
We practise our learning with the teacher and by ourselves.
We never give up!
Remember to show excellence by encouraging and including others and trying your very best.

Success Criteria:
  • I tried my very best
  • I kept on practising even when it was tricky
  • I encouraged others (excellence in my talk)
  • I used my manners, shared and I included other people in my games (excellence in my play)

Reflection

I really like: trying really hard even when I'm tired

I think I need to practice: trying a bit harder with my maths

Something that really helped me was: trying really hard to get an excellence tick.

Kerri thinks
What an excellent learner Isaac! You have thought about what excellence is and how you show it in your learning.
You try very hard and I know you love to get an excellence tick. It is tricky to keep on going when you are tired and I am pleased that you like the challenge. Keep it up!
